The following initiatives, described by the PICTURE team, are identified as Best Practices for Urban Cultural Tourism. It presents an inventory of successful cultural tourism strategies in a selection of European cities and regions in the form of 41 individual cases. Some cases have been collected and compiled by the ITAS team among lead European and international databases and scientific sources; the others have been provided by the PICTURE partners, based on their experience, professional knowledge, as well as from the research conducted under the current project. Best Practice cases are selected for their “exemplary character and level of compliance with the PICTURE main criteria for good management of the impacts of urban cultural tourism, established by the project’s framework:
Scale: Historical centre/District/Urban/Metropolitan/Regional/National/Transnational
Stage of tourism development: Beginning/Growing/Mature/Declining
Main objective: Urban and/or Regional development/Balanced tourism growth/Tourism quality management/Improve urban quality of life/Destination promotion.

The presented cases demonstrate the practical ways in which urban communities, local authorities and private stakeholders can work together to improve cultural tourism practices, urban infrastructure and development, local governance mechanisms, environmental management methods, and support overall community prosperity. They are meant to help the project users to understand how urban governance of cultural tourism depends on and is shaped by the local contexts.
Each best practice description consists of a downloadable one page document that includes the relevant assessment criteria, a short summary of the successful experience, and directs you towards additional sources, documents and/ or contact information if you wish to learn more.
Until December 15, 2006, we invite cities and other stakeholders to submit their initiatives for this PICTURE Resource centre to share and disseminate success for others to learn from their experience: besson@itas.fzk.de
