The Cathedral was erected in the place of the martyrdom of St. Donnino, and the borough was always a legacy to the martyr's filial devotion.
It is thanks to the cult of the Saint that, in the Middle Ages, the church became an obiligatory step for the "Romei", the pilgrims which, along the Francigena headed towards Rome. This dome is considered as one of the greatest examples of Roman architecture along the plane of the Po.
One of the most important moments for this cathedral was the participation of the architect and sculpter Benedetto Antelamo, to whise planning, presence and work must today still be admired. In the low reliefs, which adorn the facade, a considerable series of historical reflections is expressed. |
