At the origins of this publication, there is a seminar that was the following of the Bamberg's one in 1988 and that comes before the Porto's one.
These three meetings are part if the programme launched by the Council of Europe in order to revitalize the ways of Santiago de Compostela, for them becoming really the first European cultural route. The programme aims at identifying the former ways of pilgrimage in the whole European territory, and at restoring the architectural and cultural heritage formed by ten centuries of movement towards Compostela, which ways and paths became a space of meeting and mutual knowledge, where was born an important part of European identity.
