History of the Trier way
The Way of Trier tells the story of several events from the life of Saint Martin, who went to Trier three times to meet its emperors. It links Trier, Luxembourg, Reims, Paris, Chartes and Tours and enables walkers to travel through time on this symbolic journey of rediscovery (Trier: the Basilica of Constantine – Porta Nigra – the Ardennes: the armistice of 11th November 1918, Reims cathedral: where Clovis I was coronated with the patronage of Saint Martin, Paris: the Saint Martin district…).

This route is emblematic in that it connects these two countries through the idea of Saint Martin of Tours, a figure celebrated by all German children on 11th November (Saint Martin’s day), and who is still very much a part of traditions; and through the desire for reconciliation between France and Germany on 11th November, which could become the symbol of a community which remembers and of rapprochement between the French and the Germans, encouraged by the shared traditions of Saint Martin.

In 2007, the Luxembourg – Trier section was opened by 12 young volunteers. This journey began with the presentation of the sculpture, “le pas de Saint Martin (the footprint of Saint Martin) at the Saint Martin church in Arlon and ended at the Basilica of Constantine in Trier. This route was crossed exactly as Saint Martin crossed it, accompanied by a donkey and seeking hospitality from those who live in the municipalities of the Greater Region, and was a great success.

The way opened by Hubert Morel
On 4th June Hubert Morel left Worms in Germany. After a stop in Mayence, where there is a magnificent Saint Martin cathedral, he arrived in Trier on 14th June. Here he officially open the Way of Trier, which he was to complete on foot, a journey which taken around two months, leading him to Tours, where he arrived at the end of July. (Worms – Trier: 200 km / Trier – Tours: 830 km).

Hubert Morel passed through Luxembourg between 16th and 20th June 2010.

In document on the right of this article you will find Hubert's testimony on this portion of the road.

Hubert created this interactive Google map.
Extremely precise (he made a complete statement GPS), it resumes the historic road, but also feasible nowadays, of Saint Martin in the Greater Region.

By following this map you can right now walk too on the route of Saint Martin's.

A very beautiful ballad in the Greater Region for sunny days!
