The Castel - mondorf.info

From 65 before Christ, the Castel of Mondorf was built on Celtic fortifications. But the name of the city comes from a niece of Charlemagne called “Muomina� whose name became afterwards "Muomendorph".

Between Mondorf and Altwies there is a small chapel on a rocky massif: the Castel. During the Roman area there was in place of the Castel a military edifice, the Castellum that permitted to watch over and to protect the route between Metz and Treves.

In the XVI° century the Castel became a famous place of pilgrimage. A procession was held each year on Whit Monday and connected the church of Mondof with the Castel.

Since the final delimitation of the borders in the XVIII° century the Castel stands on the french territory in Lorraine but severals routes from Altwies and Mondorf take to the Castel.

In the XIX° century, the history of the small agrarian city changed. A notary from Mondorf used to take waters in Aachen discovered that the water of Aachen and the water of Mondorf was the same. He told the inhabitants to transform Mondorf in a spa. Since that period the city pulls lots of hotel and tourist activities but also well-known figures: Victor Hugo used to take waters in Mondorf. In 1878 the annex “les-Bains� was added to the name of the city.

The springs of Mondorf-les-Bains were discovered in 1841, 1913 and 1979. Each spring delivers mineralized water with a temperature of 25°C.

Nowadays the Domaine Thermal of Mondorf covers 50 hectares and sets up manysports and cultural activities. The spa of Mondorf-les-Bains is regard as a famous international tourist pole.
