During the second world war the synagogue had been destroyed partially. The exterior walls were intact but the inside was severely damaged. It has been rebuilt after the war.
A the beginning of the eighties, the synagogue has been definitely closed as a place of worship because of a too small community.

The first exhibition at the synagogue took place in 1993. For 15 years a lot of artists came to this atypical art centre. It get an own identity and a real radiant on the local and the international stage thanks to artists. Among them, Daniel Buren, Ann Veronica Janssens, Jean-Marc Bustamante, François Morellet, Tadashi Kawamata or more recently Stéphane Dafflon, Delphine Coindet, Jeppe Hein, Jugnet and Clairet, Peter Downsbrough, Katinka Bock, Julien Prévieux … brought their own point of view of the modern art centre through art works in situ.
>
With modest dimension, the synagogue is located in the middle of Lorraine Region in a rural area. It always considered itself as a place of production and research for artists. The art centre want to establish a real dialog with its public.
