SKOCJANSKE JAME

‘Ponvice’, especially interesting Karst compositions of limestone.
The word comes from dishes, like ‘pans’, and twice a year they are full of water.
Now they are dry.

Entrance of the underground caves, where flows river named ‘Reka’
(reka is in Slovene language ‘the river’ so we name it reka Reka, river River)

One entrance into the caves, paths are leading over stony rocks into the caves,
over bridges (about 60 m high) down to the water siphon,
where river Reka disappears
(and appears in Italy near Triest as river Timav / Timao).
Visitors path leads back through some hundred meters long tunnel
to another entance. Cable railway can be used too.

Slovene Karst
(Slovene word is ‘Kras’: a lot of Karstic special words come from Slovene language!)
is stony and hilly country, full of rocks, disappearing / appearing rivers
and even appearing / disappearing lake
(Cerknisko jezero / Cerknica Lake has some square kilometers surface).
Skocjan is village, and the caves nearby were discovered in the middle of the 18th century.
Through Skocjanske jame (on UNESCO list) runs river named Reka.
Caves are full of stalactites and stalagmites.
